Michael was admitted as an attorney in 2010, and immediately started his career as a Public Defender. He is professionally affiliated with the National Association for Public Defense, the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Dayton Bar Association. He has served as both the vice-chair and the co-chair of the Criminal Law Committee of the Dayton Bar Association. Michael is licensed to practice in the state of Ohio, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and in the United States Supreme Court. He is also death penalty certified in Ohio. In addition to being named a Rising Star in February 2019 by the Dayton Bar Association, he has published two works in the Dayton Bar Briefs: “A Whole NEW Code” and “Getting Reckless.”

Tama Lexine recently joined The Law Office of the Public Defender as an Assistant Public Defender. Tama is of Haitian descent and one of eleven children, so family has always been very important in her life. Tama observed her father’s dedication to serving the community as a Pastor for over 37 years, and her service alongside her father taught her that there is an intrinsic reward that can be gained from helping others. Tama obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from University of Central Florida (Go Knights!) and later graduated from Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Tama is licensed to practice law in Washington D.C. and Ohio and is a member of the Federal Bar Association, National Association for Public Defense, Dayton Bar Association, and Black Public Defender Association.

During law school, some of the positions Tama held were Senior Preemption and Screening Editor of the WMU Cooley Law Review, Associate Editor of the WMU Cooley Journal of Practical & Clinical Law, Teaching Assistant for Constitutional Law I and II, LexisNexis Student Representative, Themis Bar Review Student Representative, 2L Senator of the Student Bar Association, and Treasurer and Vice President of the Christian Legal Society. In addition to her many responsibilities as a student leader, Tama worked as a Legal Intern for a Solo Practitioner, competed in Mock Trial and Moot Court Competitions, and served as a member of several student organizations, local organizations, and committees.

Since law school, Tama has worked as a Personal Injury Attorney at a private firm, handling the firm’s intake, pre-litigation, and settlement matters, and as a Staff Attorney at a Legal Aid, where she served vulnerable and underrepresented populations in the areas of housing, public benefits, and consumer law. Tama spends most of her time off volunteering, exercising, thrifting, watching her favorite shows, catching up with friends and family, and going into the office to get a little bit more work done before the new week starts.

Before coming to our office, Carla practiced civil law at a private firm in Cleveland, specializing in workers’ compensation claims, personal injury, and medical malpractice. Carla has practiced as a Public Defender for seven years and is licensed to practice in the state of Ohio. Carla also enjoys being involved in the community and is a member of the City of Dayton Landmarks Commission, which encourages and promotes historic preservation and historic district revitalization. She is also involved with one of the Dayton City Commission’s Police Reform Groups, addressing systemic racism in the community and police department and focusing on police oversight. Before joining our office, Joe practiced law as a staff attorney at the Montgomery County Child Support Enforcement Agency, served as the legal service coordinator/staff attorney with the Talbert House Fatherhood Project, and worked as an attorney at a private firm. Joe is a member of the National Association for Public Defense, the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Dayton Bar Association. He is licensed to practice in the state of Ohio. In his free time, Joe enjoys reading, skiing, and golfing.

Prior, she earned her bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from the University of Cincinnati, and was admitted to the Ohio Bar in October of 2022. Nicole is currently a member of the Dayton Bar Association, and is working towards a membership with the Ohio State Bar Association. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her dogs, playing badminton, and spending time with family & friends. Nicole is also fluent in Spanish.

Rai A. Wilson (they/them) graduated from Manhattanville College with a B.A. in Youth Advocacy (Self-Designed) and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. They hold a J.D. from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis and obtained their license to practice in November 2021. In law school, Rai was the Co-President of OUTLaw and a member of the Black Law Students Association. They also participated in the Children’s Rights Clinic and worked part time as a law clerk with the MacArthur Justice Center. Rai was previously employed as a Guardian ad litem who represented children in dependency and custody proceedings. They are a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and are licensed to practice in the state of Ohio. In their free time, Rai enjoys spending time with their fiancée, playing board games, reading, cooking, watching and playing sports, as well as spending time with their seven siblings and twenty-two nieces and nephews.

Nikole graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.A. in Political Science and holds a J.D. from Capital University Law School. She has been an attorney since 2005. Her experience prior to coming to our office includes five years as a Magistrate in Montgomery County Juvenile Court. During her tenure at Juvenile Court, Nikole presided over the nationally recognized Family Treatment Court program and she continues to advocate for those who are struggling with the disease of addiction. She has been an adjunct instructor at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio for seven years and has taught courses on Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Constitutional Law, Probation and Parole, Juvenile Delinquency, and White Collar Crimes. Nikole was recently inducted as a Fellow for the Ohio State Bar Foundation and proudly serves as a Board Member for the Dayton Mediation Center. Nikole’s professional affiliations include membership with the Dayton Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association (past Chair of the Juvenile Law Committee), the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the National Association for Public Defense. Nikole has been licensed to practice in the State of Ohio and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
